This Bergenia is from the western Himalayas where it is use as a herbal medicine. Its roots are used  a treatment for kidney stones and a poultuce for stiff joints. It is an evergreen perennial with hairy margined leathery green leaves which turn red in winter. In spring it has soft pink flowers borne on short stems. They have a slight fragrance. An interesting addition to the garden boarder which also makes a great ground cover.
